Health Kick

Ok, so I’m on this little “health kick”. Nothing too fanatical mind you, but I’m starting to look a little more closely at what I eat.

For instance, who doesn’t like Combos? (Well, ok, not everyone likes them, but I do.)

In particular, I like the Pizza Combos.

Here are some interesting “stats” about this little 7 oz package of snack food, which I could easily eat in one sitting.

This is what you would consume if you ate the entire package at once:

calories: 910

total fat: 31.5 g / 49%
sat fat: 17.5 g / 91%

sodium 3,150mg / 133%
carbs 133 g / 42%

fiber 7 g / 28%

sugars 28 g

protein 14 g

SERVING SIZE IS 1 oz. 1/7th OF THE PACKAGE!

It didn’t feel like I was speeding…

Filed under: driving — Kenny @ 8:40 pm

So I’m watching the TV show Speeders, and this person got pulled over, (65 in a 45) and they said “It didn’t feel like I was going that fast”.

So, I got to thinking – when you’re driving, should you drive by “feel”, or should you actually look at your speedometer to know how fast you’re going?

What do you think? Do you drive by “feel”? How often are you aware of your speed? You should be aware of it all the time. Your driving record could depend on it. ;o)

P.S. Yes – they got a ticket.

Self Discipline and Driving

Filed under: driving — Kenny @ 10:28 pm

Navigation and computer monitoringI was driving home this evening on I-95, just taking my time, listening to some music. I had the cruise control locked in at about 65 mph as I usually do. Oh, don’t get me wrong – there are times when I speed. We all do. But the Lord has shown me a few things that have helped me to slow down most of the time.

Anyway, I was driving along, and noticed that there seemed to be quite a bit of police activity up ahead, on both sides. When I got closer, I saw that it was our trusty grey charger undercover car that had pulled someone over. Then, just up the road from that was another police unit, and a motorcycle cop too, which had just pulled someone else over.

That’s when I realized that they are out there in force tonight! I haven’t seen that in – well ever….

So I started thinking about how not too long ago, I would have been in the left lane cruising at 75+ myself… and I took a moment to thank Jesus for changing my attitude about driving.

Lately I’ve been using my GPS and car engine computer to help me drive more efficiently. With gas prices the way they are, I figure every little bit helps. My GPS tells me when I’ll arrive, so I’m not as anxious. The engine computer tells me how much fuel I’m sucking up – it’s amazing how just seeing your instantaneous fuel mileage can make your right foot lighter!

Seriously – when you realize that just by slowing down 5 or 10 miles per hour, your fuel mileage can go from say 22 to 30 miles per gallon, it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that it just makes sense to slow down.

Worried about getting there late? Duh – leave 10 minutes earlier!

I once drove from Boynton Beach to Fort Lauderdale, almost 35 miles, at 55 mph just to see how long it would take, compared to say, 70. It really wasn’t that much longer – I still got there in plenty of time for church. Just think of how much less gas I used, and how much less wear and tear there was on the car. Not to mention that I was so relaxed at that slow speed that it made driving even more fun! I was able to look around, and actually enjoy some of the scenery. You really can’t do that while you are in the fast lane, always stressing about the guy in front of you who is driving too slow, or having to get out of the way of the person behind you because even though you’re doing 80, that’s not fast enough!

No, instead, I was in the far right lane, just enjoying the ride… But – believe it or not, and I found this unbelievable – there were still people in that lane who I had to pass!! Guess you can’t get away from that…

Anyway, I would like to challenge you to just try leaving earlier, and driving slower. That’s where the self-discipline comes in. If you can’t do it, then that pretty much means that you don’t possess self control. I’m not talking about not wanting to do it – that’s attitude, and you’ll have to overcome that first. But once you do decide “Hey – I’ll take the challenge – I can do that!”, then you’ll see just how much self control and discipline you have.

Come on – are you big enough to accept my challenge? Just remember to move to the right side of the road – none of us like those slow pokes in the fast lane. ;o)
